A queer love story set against the backdrop of a climate crisis, MJ Kaufman's Galatea,or Whatever You Be reimagines John Lyly's 1585 play Gallathea with wit, heart and contemporary resonance. When their village faces impending destruction by rising waters, two young people flee into the forest disguised as boys—only to find themselves entangled in mischief, mistaken identity and unexpected love. As the gods meddle and chaos unfolds, romance blossoms in the most surprising ways. Galatea, or Whatever You Be delves into the complexities of self-identity, relationships and societal expectations, prompting thought-provoking conversations that will likely linger after the show is over. Join us for a playful, poignant tale that celebrates love, resilience and the courage to be seen. Contains adult content. Parental discretion advised. GALATEA, OR WHATEVER YOU BE was originally developed by WP Theater through a residency in the WP Lab and presented as part of the 2018 Biennial Pipeline Festival. Lisa McNulty, Producing Artistic Director; Michael Sag, Managing Director.
